KURT VILE & THE VIOLATORS
The Hunchback EP
vinyl & digital
digital version includes live set
available from Revolver/Midheaven & the TestosterTunes Webstore
Kurt’s first big step into BIG ROCK, originally released in 2009 & sold out quickly over the course of a few trips across the USA. Full-on electric & an essential piece of the puzzle. Most of the globe has met Kurt by now, but only the fortunate few have gotten a taste of these early raw sounds.
The timeless record of 2009 is back in an expanded version for 2013. Fans of Kurt Vile’s previous work cried into their pillows and accused him of selling out the bedroom rock scene, while the initiated few knew he’d been doing it for years… plugging in with a full-on rock band called The Violators and gigging in all corners of Philly.
With baritone guitar / bassist Adam Granduciel, rodeo slide and fuzz guitar from Jesse Turbo, and perfect percussion from Mike Zeng, The Violators are Vile’s Crazy Horse, slugging it out with him when he feels like playing with a full band. Oddly pleasant singing, in-the-red fingerpicking, twisting swells of feedback, totally pounding drums, and Kraut-like zen fill both sides of this record. Loud and proud, The Hunchback looks right filed next to one’s Neil, Faust and Spacemen 3 records.
This special 2013 pressing comes with a digital download coupon that features bonus live material.
“the Violators are a serious band – drummer is basically perfect, and so is the way the other two (on guitar, bass, baritone guitar, more) blend with KV’s six-string brilliance. I don’t even mind that four out of the six cuts are instrumentals, or that the record is over way too fast… makes it that much easier to play it again and again…” — Larry “Fuzz-O” Dolman, Blastitude
“… ‘The Hunchback’ [is] a dirgelike, dour crash of gales of half-regarded, stately jangle into a pile of shakers and tambourines. It’s a three-chord wander, topping out the mono-chord raga of ‘Good Lookin Out,’ and it could also pass for a lost shoegaze classic of ’92.” — Doug Mosurak, Still Single

Debut LP from SPACIN’, the newly formed Philadelphia act that’s bringing together kick-flippers, arm-wrestlers, and hackey-sackers in head-nodding, beer swilling unity. Inhales the same fumes that fuel the Velvets workout at the gymnasium, the Stooges sleazy-fuzz with Asheton on guitar, and the groovy zen of Nigeria ’70.
From the same family of freakers responsible for Birds of Maya, Purling Hiss, Megajam Booze Band, etc..
